3 Things to Consider Before Installing a Hot Tub

Mon Nov 01 2021

Soaking in a hot tub is a great way to destress, soothe your muscles, and spend time together with your family. However, before you embark on researching the best hot tub for your home, check your local zoning regulations or any restrictions with your homeowners’ association. If you are permitted, below are a few things to consider before installing your hot tub.

1. Location is key

There’s a few things to consider before installing a hot tub. First, you’ll likely want privacy and tranquility, so keep in mind traffic noise and viewsight from your neighbors when determining the location for the hot tub. Second, you’ll want to choose a spot on your property that’s not ridiculously far from your driveway. Remember, you’ll have to get the hot tub from the delivery truck to your desired location.

In addition to the reasons above, you’ll need a spot that’s flat and firm. A hot tub can weigh anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 pounds, so you’ll need a location that can support the weight. You’ll also need to find a location that’s at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines and near a water source and electrical circuit. We also don’t recommend placing a hot tub under large trees, as you’ll have to deal with falling leaves.

2. Electrical outlets must be powerful enough

Make sure that the electrical outlet you’ll be using for your hot tub has enough power to support your hot tub. You’ll typically need a GFCI circuit breaker with the amp and voltage based on your hot tub’s specifications. This type of electrical work should only be done by a licensed electrician. 3. Keep timing in mind

If you need your hot tub filled and ready to enjoy before a big party or gathering, it’s important to be realistic with timing. There’s a lot of variables to determine how long it will take, but new hot tubs average around four to eight hours to heat (typical desired temperature is 100 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit). You’ll also want to wait a day for the chemicals in the water to balance and for any chlorine level to be safe.

Owning a hot tub is a large responsibility for any homeowner. It can be a place to relax after a long day, but it can also cause a lot of unnecessary stress. Give ProTech Electrical Services a call today at (267) 984-0888 to learn more about our services and how we can meet your electrical needs.
